Formula 1 Launches Virtual Grand Prix Series

Formula 1 has launched a Virtual Grand Prix Series to run while the league is suspended due to COVID-19. The esports exhibition series will see current F1 drivers compete in the PC version of F1 2019, the official video game of Formula 1.

The first virtual race took place yesterday at the virtual Bahrain Grand Prix, which was scheduled to host the real-world F1 race this past weekend. Each driver will join races remotely, and F1 is preparing to broadcast the series from London’s Gfinity Esports Arena (or remotely if required). The races will be shown on F1.com as well as the league’s YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook channels.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY: Join us March 26–27 for our free virtual conference

Formula 1 plans to alter certain game settings based on a driver’s gaming skill level to promote competitiveness on the virtual track. The game features certain settings that can dictate car performance such as reduced vehicle damage, optional anti-lock brakes, and traction control. F1’s esports series is currently planned to run through May but can be extended if the pandemic postpones more races.
