Colorado Springs Arena Looking For New Anchor Tenant

The Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs is "courting sports franchises to take the place" of Colorado College's men's hockey program, which is leaving after next season for a new on-campus venue, according to a front-page piece by Kate Shefte of the Colorado Springs GAZETTE. Colorado College has called the arena home since it opened in '98, but the school's new Ed Robson Arena "is projected to open" in October '21. Broadmoor World Arena GM Dot Lischick said, "We are actively looking for other sports franchises. We're interested in another hockey team that meets the needs of Colorado Springs and the venue." Shefte notes the arena this week sent out a survey to 200,000 recipients stating that "along with community partners and stakeholders, it is 'actively pursuing new sports franchises,'" including potential AHL teams. Lischick indicated that there is "no deal and no team yet, and that the process is in the early stages." One AHL team rumored to be on the move is the Stockton Heat, whose attendance last season was "fourth worst in the AHL" (Colorado Springs GAZETTE, 2/25). The Flames, which own the Heat, last week announced plans to "extend its current lease at Stockton Arena through the '20-21 season as the franchise and the city "continue to negotiate a multi-year lease" (STOCKTON RECORD, 2/20).
