Oakland A’s Become First MLB Club Whose Local Audio Coverage Will Only Be Digital

The Oakland A’s will not have a Bay Area radio partner for the 2020 season, and their spring training and regular season games will only be available through streaming media via the free TuneIn app. They become the first MLB club whose local audio coverage will be only digital.

The franchise already had a TuneIn channel, A’s Cast, carrying daily live talk shows and regular interviews with team president Dave Kaval, general manager David Forst, and manager Bob Melvin, among other shoulder content. A’s Cast also began airing pioneering analytics-themed alternate broadcasts to select games last season. A’s Cast, which was the No. 1 downloaded MLB team podcast in 2019, will now be home to all game broadcasts as well.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY: Make Sure You’re at the World’s Premier Sports Tech Event (March 26–27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn)

A’s games still will be carried on terrestrial radio on KHTK–AM 1140 in Sacramento and 11 other affiliates in Northern California. Two Spanish-language channels—KIQI (1010 AM, San Francisco) and KATD (990 AM, Pittsburg)—will broadcast Friday, Saturday and Sunday home games in the Bay Area.

Oakland will also become the first big league club to produce a commercial-free broadcast once every homestand.

The A’s have partnered with 15 radio stations since moving to Oakland in 1968, according to The Mercury News. Games were broadcast on conservative talk station 860 KTRB in 2019.
