Barça Fans Will Be Able to Buy a Say in Club Decisions via a New Cryptocurrency Token

Fans of FC Barcelona will soon be able to buy cryptocurrency tokens that give them a say in everyday club decisions. The Spanish soccer club struck its first blockchain deal, partnering with Chiliz to create the Barca Fan Tokens ($BAR).

The tokens will be available on Socios.com or the Socios mobile app. (Socios is a blockchain rewards platform owned by Chiliz.) Fans with tokens will be able to vote on club topics through digital polls and surveys, and will be rewarded with points for voting. Those points can be exchanged for FC Barcelona merchandise or experiences. Socios will also display a leaderboard that tracks fan activity and points accumulation.

“[FC Barcelona] is without a doubt the most renowned and the most supported football club in the world and we can’t wait to see their fans start to influence club decisions. Adding FC Barcelona fans to the Socios.com global community takes us one step closer to our goal of mainstream adoption of blockchain,” Alexandre Dreyfus, CEO and founder of Socios and Chiliz, said in a press release.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY: Make Sure You’re at the World’s Premier Sports Tech Event (March 26–27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn)

Chiliz will create 40 million Barca Fan Tokens upon initial launch, slated to occur in the second quarter of this year. The tokens will initially cost €2 ($2.17). Previous soccer teams to have joined the Socios platform include French club Paris Saint-Germain, Italian club Juventus, and English club West Ham.
