Nike's Olympic Apparel Emphasizes Recycled Materials, Sustainability

Nike's "Move to Zero" collection products are made of partially organic fabrics meant to reduce wasteNIKE

Nike's lineup for the Tokyo Games will feature "apparel that mixes technology and sustainability" in an effort to "call attention to the need for climate action," according to Reggie Wade of YAHOO FINANCE. Nike's "Move to Zero" collection products are made of "at least 60% recycled and organic fabrics using new manufacturing methods meant to reduce waste." Nike Chief Design Officer John Hoke said that the company is "committed to creating more sustainable products." Skateboarding will make its Olympic debut this year, and it not having an official uniform did not stop Nike from "becoming the official uniform supplier for teams USA, France, Brazil, Nigeria and Korea." The 100% recycled polyester uniforms will "feature an upper that was inspired by basketball jerseys for Team USA, a soccer jersey for Brazil, and a tennis jersey for France." Meanwhile, Nike also will "supply the uniforms for the USA men's and women's basketball teams." The women's uniforms feature the USA wordmark of the '96 Gold Medal-winning women's team. U.S. medalists will "sport some of Nike's lowest-impact footwear and apparel." Nike's Windrunner jacket is made of 100% recycled polyester, and the Team USA pant "follows suit with 100% recycled nylon and a 100% recycled polyester mesh lining." The Nike swoosh and national team logos are "stamped with recycled Nike Grind rubber, which uses recycled footwear and surplus manufacturing materials" (FINANCE.YAHOO.com, 2/5).

SUSTAINABLE PLAN: New Nike CEO John Donahoe said the company is "investing heavily in sustainability." Donahoe: "The investment and commitment to innovating in a sustainable way is something that matters to our athletes and it matters to Nike." He said the consumer "increasingly cares about sustainability and so they're looking to companies, like Nike, to lead in this dimension and therefore, we're stepping in with significant investment" ("Closing Bell," CNBC, 2/5).

ON THE BIGGEST STAGE: WOMEN'S WEAR DAILY's Jean Palmieri noted Nike chose N.Y. Fashion Week to "take the wraps off several of its most-heralded product creations." More than 100 "elite and everyday athletes" donned the product line on the runway last night during what Nike called an "immersive experience that will showcase the new technology and designs that Nike's team of engineers and product designers have created for the Games." The show, styled by fashion icon Melanie Ward, also highlighted other Nike products (WWD.com, 2/5).
