Italian Soccer Club AS Roma Joins Digital Trading Card App Sorare

Italian soccer club AS Roma has joined the digital trading card app Sorare. The platform allows users to trade blockchain-authenticated digital collectables of soccer players.

More than 30 soccer clubs have licensing agreements with Sorare, including Spanish soccer clubs Atlético Madrid and Valencia CF and German soccer club Schalke 04. Users can buy, sell, or trade digital cards with other users and create lineups based on their collectables to compete in fantasy contests on Sorare.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY: Don’t Miss the World’s Premier Sports Tech Event (March 26–27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn)

Lineups consist of five cards and users can win weekly prizes for winning tournaments. For every player and every season, Sorare issues one “unique” card, 10 “super rare” cards, 100 “rare” cards, as well as an unlimited number of free common cards.

A user’s fantasy team is ranked by the real-life performance of their players. Bonus points are applied based on the assigned value and rarity of individual player cards.

Blockchain software company ConsenSys has invested in Sorare, which is based in Paris. French video game publisher Ubisoft has also accepted Sorare into its Entrepreneurs Lab’s program to help accelerate Sorare’s global growth plans. Fantasy contests are being used by both digital and traditional trading card publishers to bolster user engagement, as Panini America’s VP of Marketing Jason Howarth explained to SportTechie in August.
