NFL Returns To Super Bowl Ad Lineup With Star-Studded Spot

The NFL will be "back with another huge spot" in Super Bowl LIV that will run "just before kickoff," according to Tom Schad of USA TODAY. This year's spot will "draw from the same playbook as last year's ad, which finished first in USA Today's Ad Meter, a ranking of Super Bowl ads by consumer rating." Like that "The 100-Year Game" spot, this year's ad will "feature a long line of celebrities and a rollercoaster journey through the lens of football." NFL CMO Tim Ellis said that the league last summer approved an idea that was "very close" to its '19 commercial, before "abruptly reversing course about a week or two later." Ellis: "It almost felt like a sequel." Schad notes the NFL will not "release the full ad before it airs Sunday, but it did release a trailer" yesterday. The spot "follows Maxwell 'Bunchie' Young, 13, on a journey across the United States, culminating in Miami for the Super Bowl." Among the stars who will "make an appearance in the spot" are Joe Montana, Steve Young, Ray Lewis, Brett Favre, Christian McCaffrey, Saquon Barkley, skateboarder Nyjah Huston and USWNT F Carli Lloyd. The spot also will "feature 32 youth football players," Ellis said that this year's NFL spot is "one of four commercials that the league will air" on Sunday. Schad notes two of the other ads already have "aired during the postseason and will touch on the league's player health and 'Inspire Change' initiatives" (USA TODAY, 1/29).
