Fewer Purdue Football Home Games To Create Financial Issues

Purdue's football program will play just six home games for the next three seasons and four times in the next five years, which creates a "financial challenge as costs continue to rise and potential expenses are added with new NCAA legislation expected to happen," according to Mike Carmin of the Lafayette JOURNAL & COURIER. Starting this season, Purdue will have "one less home game in all but one year" through '24. Purdue AD Mike Bobinski said, "When you lose all that happens around a home game from a revenue perspective, it creates a seven-figure plus hole that needs to be somehow accounted for." Bobinski said that the revenue "generated from each game" at the 57,236-seat Ross-Ade Stadium is approximately $1.6M. Carmin noted in the next five years, the athletic department "will lose out on" more than $6M in revenue with four fewer games. Meanwhile, with only six home games, the cost of season tickets "will decrease," being "lowered anywhere from $6 to $24 a seat, depending on location." Purdue "plans to be mindful of the need to play seven home games each season" as it puts together future schedules. Bobinski did "examine changing the upcoming schedules but it probably would've cost more to cancel games and find another opponent to fill the open date" (Lafayette JOURNAL & COURIER, 1/26).
