Federal Grand Jury Subpoenas Testimony Of Three USOPC Officials

A U.S. District Court grand jury "subpoenaed the sworn testimony" of three current or former USOPC officials as part of an ongoing Justice Department and IRS "investigation into the USOPC and national governing bodies' handling of sexual abuse cases," according to documents cited by Scott Reid of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER. A grand jury "requested the depositions" of USOPC Dir of Risk Management Eric Marsh, Manager of Sport Performance Meredith Miller and former USOPC ombudsman John Ruger as part of an '18 civil suit against the USOPC, USA Taekwondo, the U.S. Center for SafeSport and taekwondo competitor Steven Lopez and his brother Jean, a national team coach. The grand jury also "subpoenaed the deposition of Leah Wickes, who assisted attorney Donald Alperstein in investigating alleged SafeSport violations for USA Taekwondo." Sources said that DOJ and IRS officials also are "looking into financial practices of officials" at USA Gymnastics, USA Swimming and other NGBs. The investigation is being directed by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Kent. The U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern District of New York also is "investigating USA Swimming's handling of sexual abuse cases and an off-shore insurance company created and owned by the NGB" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 1/15).
