49ers' Richard Sherman Touts Fruitful Self-Negotiated Contract

Sherman was widely criticized for the incentive-laden, three-year deal he negotiated in '18getty images

49ers CB and NFLPA Exec Committee member RICHARD SHERMAN's selection to the AP's All-Pro second team activated a $2M incentive in the contract that he "negotiated for himself with the 49ers two years ago," according to Matt Kawahara of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Sherman was "widely criticized" for the incentive-laden, three-year deal that he negotiated with the 49ers in March '18 along with his wife, ASHLEY MOSS, "months removed from an Achilles injury" that ended his '17 season. Sherman on Friday said he felt like he "made the right decision" at the time of the negotiation. On whether he believes his results might influence other NFLers to handle their own contract negotiations, Sherman said, "I hope it does. ... I hope it just gives players a thought. I mean, it's not for everybody. Everybody shouldn't negotiate their own deals. But I think there are guys who have a tremendous amount of leverage, who have a full understanding of who they are as players and where they stand in the pecking order." Sherman referred to Seahawks LB BOBBY WAGNER, who negotiated his own three-year, $54M contract extension in July that made him the league's "highest-paid middle linebacker." Sherman said, "There's a lot of help you can get from the (NFL Players Association) and a lot of help that the agents get from the P.A. that really allows you to feel confident going into it" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/4).
