Redskins Expected To Wait Until After April's Draft To Hire GM

Rivera has made it clear that he wants a collaborative approach to the team's football operationsredskins

The Redskins "don't intend to hire a general manager until after the NFL Draft in April," according to JP Finlay of NBCSPORTSWASHINGTON.com. Sources said that new coach Ron Rivera and Owner Dan Snyder "don't want to disrupt the draft preparation that is already well underway." Rivera also "likes the look of the Redskins last three draft classes." Finlay noted this is "good news for the Redskins current front office." Redskins Senior VP/Football Operations & General Counsel Eric Schaffer is a "respected contract negotiator with good relationships with agents," and Senior VP/Player Personnel Doug Williams can "point to his successful move" to bring in RB Adrian Peterson in '18. Rivera has "made clear he wants a 'collaborative' approach and has met with all of the current front office members" (NBCSPORTSWASHINGTON.com, 1/5).

BUILDING HIS STAFF: In DC, Carpenter, Maske & Copeland note Rivera is "close to filling most of the key positions on his coaching staff," but some around the NFL are "less certain about what Rivera will do with the front office." Some said that they expect Rivera to name a "top personnel person" soon, while others "say they think he will keep the current group" of Schaffer, Williams and Pro Scouting Dir Alex Santos. As of this past weekend, many in the Redskins front office had "little clarity as to their standing with Rivera or his plans for their jobs." Rivera said that he wants to "meet with the four core front-office members to see how they can work together." Sources said that ESPN's Louis Riddick has been a "leading front-office candidate" for the team (WASHINGTON POST, 1/6).
