DirecTV's 4K Sugar Bowl Broadcast Experiences Technical Issues

DirecTV's 4K broadcast of the Georgia-Baylor Allstate Sugar Bowl "seemed to have some significant problems" as Twitter "filled up with reports of the picture going out at times," according to Andrew Bucholtz of AWFUL ANNOUNCING. The 4K broadcast appeared on a special channel, not the regular ESPN feed. The problems are "not a great look" for a 4K broadcast to have such a "prolonged sound outage, especially considering the picture outages as well" (AWFULANNOUNCING.com, 1/1).

NO COMPRENDO: In Birmingham, Mark Heim wrote some fans watching the Alabama-Michigan Vrbo Citrus Bowl on ABC were "surprised ... to hear the game being called in Spanish." The Vrbo Citrus Bowl's official account tweeted this statement: "Hola amigos! We're aware some viewers are receiving the Spanish broadcast rather than English. Please consult your television provider for support as we have no control over issues of this matter." Some fans "didn't have a choice on which language to hear the broadcast" and took to social media to ask questions (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 1/1).

SPELL CHECK: In N.Y., Mark Fischer notes ESPN "misspelled 'Wisconsin,' instead printing 'Wisconson' on a TV graphic" during its broadcast of the Wisconsin-Oregon Rose Bowl yesterday. It is "unclear how long the misspelling appeared on-screen." Fischer: "What a sin, ESPN" (N.Y. POST, 1/2).
