Media Notes

In San Jose, Jon Wilner noted Arizona State men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley “became (to the best of our knowledge) the first coach to publicly criticize” Pac-12 Networks. Pac-12 VP/Public Affairs Andrew Walker said the conference is “aware of the comments” made by Hurley about two broadcasters and “will address internally.” But Wilner wrote Pac-12 HQ “should recognize the potential implications at play -- the precedent that could be established by Hurley’s comments.” The “last thing the Pac-12 Networks need is more public roasting” (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 12/15).

BLAZING A TRAIL: In N.Y., Katie Robertson wrote ESPN's Mina Kimes since starting at the net in '14 as a senior writer has "found a natural affinity for hosting and commentary, making regular appearances" on TV and podcasts. Over the summer, she was "selected to do color commentary" for the Rams during the preseason. Kimes: "People are really excited right now to see women in new roles. When I was young, as a crazy football addict, it wasn't something I saw, and maybe that's why I thought it was never something I can do" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/15).

DIAMOND NOTES: Astros radio analyst Steve Sparks is "recovering at his home after suffering a heart attack last week." The team in a statement said Sparks is "expecting a full recovery," and the Astros "look forward to welcoming him back to the booth this spring" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 12/16)....WEEI is "still sorting out its Red Sox radio broadcast booth for next season." But sources said that it is "going to be a more streamlined operation" in '20 after an "assortment of voices" alongside Joe Castiglione last season. Sean McDonough is expected to "call a similar number of games to this past season (he was in the 30s)" (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/15).
