Amazon Will Broadcast Champions League Matches in Germany for 2021-22 Season

Amazon has acquired the rights to broadcast Champions League matches in Germany for the 2021-22 season. Games will stream Tuesday evenings on Amazon Prime Video.

UEFA’s Champions League is the top European soccer tournament, held each year to determine the best club in Europe. In terms of net sales revenue, Germany was Amazon’s second-biggest market in 2018 behind the U.S., according to data from Statista. British broadcaster Sky currently holds Champions League rights in Germany.

“We’re excited to bring UEFA Champions League football to our customers in Germany,” Alex Green, managing director at Amazon’s Prime Video Sport Europe division, said in a statement.

Amazon has held audio rights for Bundesliga, Germany’s top domestic soccer league, since 2017. The e-commerce giant is going after live sports rights. This month has seen Amazon start broadcasting Premier League games in the U.K. as part of its three-year agreement with the league.

Other notable live sports streaming deals that Amazon has struck include rights to broadcast the ATP Tour and WTA in the U.K., as well as a deal with the NFL for Thursday Night Football. According to the New York Post, Amazon is also nearing a deal to stream New York Yankees games.
