Red Sox Sign Three Baseball Ops Execs To Multiyear Extensions

The Red Sox signed Senior VP/Major & Minor League Operations RAQUEL FERREIRA, Senior VP & Assistant GM ZACK SCOTT and Exec VP & Assistant GM EDDIE ROMERO to multiyear contract extensions. All three will now hold the title of Exec VP & Assistant GM (Red Sox). In Providence, Bill Koch notes Romero and Scott were "tasked with presiding over day-to-day operations after the September firing" of former President of Baseball Operations DAVE DOMBROWSKI. Ferreira is only the fourth woman to be named an Assistant GM of an MLB team. Her previous role included "handling daily operations" for the Red Sox' six minor league affiliates. Romero will now "work more closely with the major league club, expanding his role in contract negotiations and 40-man roster movement." Scott will enter his 17th season with the team "in charge of the club's analytics and baseball systems departments." He also "oversees some aspects" of the Red Sox' "sports science division and will assist in player acquisition and contract analysis" (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 12/10).

COME A LONG WAY: MLB.com's Bryan Hoch noted Ferreira has "seen great change within the sport's front offices" since being hired by the Red Sox in '99 as an administrative assistant. But Ferreira said that MLB "still has more ground to cover to reach its optimal goals." She also said that in her time with the Red Sox, she has "learned to use her identity as a strength." Ferreira: "It's not a bad thing. When I first started, I was like, 'I'm one of the guys! I'm a girl's guy,' I should be one of the girls, and I'm proud of that" (MLB.com, 12/9).
