Grupo Globo Turns to Pixellot to Power Coverage of Brazilian Sports

Pixellot has partnered with Brazilian media conglomerate Grupo Globo to power broadcasts of Brazilian sports events. The partnership will also see Grupo Globo investing $3.3 million into the automated sports video production company in exchange for equity.

AI cameras and connected streaming system will be installed at sports venues across Brazil to capture content for distribution on Grupo Globo platforms. The Grupo Globo network owns media rights in Brazil for competitions such as the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games, Brasileirão Série A, Volleyball Superliga, and CONMEBOL soccer tournaments.

PRO DAY: Join SportTechie in NYC on Dec. 12 for Sports Media Production & Consumption

“Artificial Intelligence applied to computer vision can be a revolution in sports events and Globo wants to be one of the companies leading this trend,'' said Jorge Nóbrega, Grupo Globo CEO, in a press release.

Pixellot’s cameras can track the flow of play, update scoreboards, identify highlights and insert advertisements without any human intervention. Grupo Globo will use the company’s capabilities to cover men’s and women’s pro soccer leagues, semi-pro leagues and niche sports.

Past investors in Tel-Aviv-based Pixellot include venture capital firms Shamrock Capital, Firstime, Baidu and Asahi Broadcasting Company. Joe Lemire recently spoke to Pixellot’s North American president Dave Shapiro, who explained how the production system integrates into sports broadcasts. Shapiro will also be a featured speaker at SportTechie’s upcoming Sports Media Production and Consumption PRO Day in New York City on Dec. 12.
