Breakfast Of Champions: Flutie Flakes Return To Western New York

Flutie Flakes first debuted in '98, and were brought back for their 10th anniversary in '08EBAY

The sale of Flutie Flakes was a phenomenon in the late '90s when Doug Flutie was starring for the Bills, and the cereal will be "re-launched to help benefit the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism," according to Nick Wojton of the ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE. Boxes of the cereal and T-shirts with its branding "will be sold at New Era Field this weekend," where Flutie will be recognized by the Bills as the "Legend of the Game." The cereal then will "go on sale the following week at Wegmans locations and eventually at select FYE and WalMart locations," as well as online. Flutie Flakes following its release in '98 "sold 2.3 million boxes" (ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE, 12/4). Flutie on Monday said, "I was surprised it did what it did when it did. Then we came out with a 10th anniversary and those did OK, did fairly well. Then they started talking 20th anniversary and I'm like, 'We're pushing this, aren't we?'" ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein noted Flutie's "marketing people and agent told him that there was still interest, particularly in the Buffalo area." Flutie "doesn't have a number in his head of boxes to sell," but he "doesn't expect the impact now to be anywhere close to the rage it was" when first released (ESPN.com, 12/3).
