Blockchain-Backed Fantasy Soccer Game Sorare Adds 30th Club to Its Platform

Blockchain-backed fantasy soccer game Sorare has announced licensing agreements with Spanish soccer clubs Atlético Madrid and Valencia CF as well as the German soccer club Schalke 04. Sorare now has 30 soccer clubs represented on its platform.

Sorare uses blockchain to authenticate limited-edition digital player card collectibles. Users own their cards and can buy, sell or trade cards with other users. The fantasy game allows gamers to craft a lineup consisting of five player cards, with players earning points based on their on-field performance. Bonus points can be applied based on the assigned value of individual player cards while users compete for weekly prizes.

“Sorare’s innovation and expertise make them a perfect partner to introduce this ground-breaking game and what we believe will become coveted digital collectibles for Atlético Madrid fans around the world,” Susana Martínez, head of licensing at Atlético Madrid, said in a press release.

Blockchain software company ConsenSys has invested in Sorare. French video game publisher Ubisoft has also accepted Sorare into its Entrepreneurs Lab’s program to help accelerate Sorare’s global growth plans.

Fantasy contests are being used by both digital and traditional trading card publishers to bolster user engagement, as Panini America’s VP of Marketing Jason Howarth explained to SportTechie in August.
