Padres Draft Proposal To Redevelop Popular Tailgate Park

The Padres are "drafting a proposal to completely redo the four-block, city-owned parcel where the team currently operates the popular parking lot known as Tailgate Park," according to a front-page piece by Jennifer Van Grove of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. The club said that it will "later this year pitch a mixed-use project that will including housing, retail and office space" for the 7.65-acre site. This "early-stage redevelopment effort" comes as the city "prepares to offload the property through a competitive bidding process." The club holds a lease with the city that runs through '42 including options, but there are "provisions that allow for modification of the property so long as the Padres are compensated for lost revenue and parking spaces are replaced." At one point, the property was "being eyed" by the Chargers, which had "hoped to build a downtown football stadium." The city did not explain why Tailgate Park is currently being marketed for sale, though a spokesperson said that it is "required by state law to have the site developed" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 11/22).
