Cameo Gives Stars Ability To Directly Profit Off Video Appearances

Cameo is a relatively new app that "lets users purchase personalized shout-outs for friends and family from a growing roster of talent," including many professional athletes, according to Jonas Shaffer of the BALTIMORE SUN. Across the NFL and the "wider world of sports," Cameo has "found an audience," as ten current Ravens players and several former players have accounts. Through Cameo, fans can buy a "'Happy birthday' message," pep talk or even a "fantasy football jab." Since launching in '17, "over 400,000 videos have been produced," and now has about 20,000 celebrities and athletes with accounts. Cameo's "marketplace for talent reflects the NFL's," with bigger names drawing bigger fees for videos. While celebrities can "determine their own rates, they are not immune to market forces." Ravens DE Chris Wormley originally set his price at $25, but said that he had to "take it down" to $20 after no one was "biting." For NFL players, the "payoff -- 75% of every booking -- amounts to pocket change," and "not every request needs to be fulfilled." Ravens QB Robert Griffin III said that some are "too 'crazy' to accept." A number of Ravens players said that they "almost never know the fans making Cameo requests" (BALTIMORE SUN, 11/7).
