Jets GM Takes Christopher Johnson's Harsh Comment In Stride

An "off-the-cuff comment" by Jets Chair & CEO Christopher Johnson ahead of the team's loss to the Jaguars on Sunday has "made for embarrassing headlines," according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. Johnson, who was speaking to a Jets fan who had driven nine hours to the game in Jacksonville, said, "Hopefully, the team will actually show up this week." The clip was "later shared by a fan on social media." First-year GM Joe Douglas: "My take was he seemed like he was a person like a lot of people in this building -- passionate and frustrated about where we are at 1-6. I can tell you my feelings on Christopher haven't changed one bit" (ESPN.com, 10/29). In New Jersey Andy Vasquez writes of the incident, "It should be noted that Johnson doesn't seem to know he's being recorded." But the comment is "notable because it's the first sign that Johnson is not feeling so great about the drastic changes he made to the organization this offseason." He has "not done an interview with reporters since May, on the day he fired then-GM Mike Maccagnan" (Bergen RECORD, 10/30). CBS Sports Radio’s Jim Rome: “When the team’s CEO is telling fans on tape, ‘Hopefully the team will actually show up this week,’ then you’ve got yourself a big problem. That doesn’t mean you stick with (coach Adam) Gase any longer than you have to, but thinking that getting rid of him is going to make everything alright is pretty foolish” (“The Jim Rome Show,” CBS Sports Radio, 10/29).
