NBA Trying To Stay Ahead Of Curve With Broadcast Presentation

NBA Senior VP/New Media Jeff Marsilio said while game broadcasts have "stayed relatively consistent" over the years, the league is beginning to take a "fresh look at the presentation of the game." Marsillo recently appeared on Variety's "Strictly Business" podcast and noted the "shape and the format" of NBA game broadcasts has not changed much even while technology and fan behavior "has rapidly evolved." The league believes there is "still a lot we can do." The NBA does want to "maintain some sense of that familiar broadcast, but we think we can also introduce some new ideas." Moving forward, something the fan base has "come to expect is choice" and Marsilio believes it is a "mistake to not provide" a variety of choices. Meanwhile, some have speculated that presented with optionality through NBA League Pass, "fewer people (are) going to subscribe to the big package and just start purchasing quarters." However, Marsilio said that "doesn't end up being" the case. Marsilio: "The smaller packages, like a quarter or an individual game, end up serving as great sampling opportunities ... so optionality ends up being additive." Fans who purchase single games end up being a "great candidate" for the league to "market the full package" to. Marsilio noted the NBA during Summer League experimented "a lot with alternate camera angles and alternate ways to provide that sense of access and immersion" and that is "going to continue throughout the season" ("Strictly Business," Variety, 10/16).
