Return Of Football Produces Spike In Digital Sports Media Audience

The digital sports media category in September predictably experienced a surge with the return of the NFL, college football and fantasy football, with the category posting its largest overall audience in any month since at least June. Monthly Comscore rankings of multiplatform digital reach and engagement showed the sports category last month posted a total audience of 192.8 million, up 3.8% from 185.8 million in August and 187.2 million in September '18. Last month's consumption average of 159.4 minutes per user represented a nearly 48% increase over the 107.9 minutes per user in August and a 4.7% increase over the 152.3 minutes per user in September '18, with the latest spike no doubt fueled in part by continued growth in season-long fantasy football. ESPN once again led the category during September with a reach total of 103.8 million unique users, up from 87.2 million in '18.
