In S.F., Rusty Simmons profiles Warriors Chief Legal Officer of Business and Basketball DAVID KELLY, who "handles all of the franchise's legal matters, oversees the human resources department and manages the salary cap while advising on the league's less-than-intuitive" CBA. Kelly also last year added "heading player development and public and government affairs to his myriad responsibilities." He has "helped the Warriors navigate many of their biggest quagmires" since co-Owners JOE LACOB and PETER GUBER bought the team in '10. Kelly represented Lacob and Guber in "purchasing the Warriors" from former Owner CHRIS COHAN while working for Chicago-based law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman. After hearing the Warriors were "seeking general counsel through a friend at Wasserman Media Group," Kelly "applied and was hired" in '12 (S.F. CHRONICLE, 10/14).

FEEL-GOOD STORIES: Children's Medical Foundation President BRENT CHRISTOPHER "assembled a dream team to spread the word" about the work Children's Medical Center Dallas does, enlisting DIRK NOWITZKI, TROY AIKMAN, JORDAN SPIETH and CLAYTON KERSHAW. All four athletes "actively support Children's, giving time and money." Each of the four and their wives have "done 15- and 30-second TV spots telling why they chose Children's for their philanthropy. " There is also a PSA that "compiles all of their stories" that will "begin airing this week" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 10/13)....NFL Network's TOM PELISSERO's wife, SARA, had a "successful bout with breast cancer" and it was "heartwarming to see the Vikings and NFL honor Sara and Tom at halftime" of Eagles-Vikings as part of the league's "Crucial Catch" initiative to fight cancer (USA TODAY, 10/14)....The Cavaliers on Saturday "bypassed a full practice" to instead visit team Owner DAN GILBERT at his home about 20 miles outside Detroit. Gilbert "continues to recover from a stroke suffered on May 26" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 10/13).

NAMES: Univ. of Saint Joseph men’s basketball coach JIM CALHOUN addressed the recent allegations of sexual discrimination by former USJ Associate AD JACLYN PISCITELLI. He said, "I have made mistakes throughout my life and I know that I will continue to do so. However, I firmly and unequivocally, at no time, knowingly treated any woman unfairly because of her gender. In addition, let me be clear, I have never treated any woman inappropriately" (ESPN.com, 10/13)....Hockey HOFer DOMINIK HASEK "continues to drop hints that he’ll consider running for president of the Czech Republic" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/13)....SHAQUILLE O’NEAL was in Las Vegas this past week as a "brand ambassador for the company JBL, which manufactures audio equipment" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 10/12)....The lease for Pro Football HOFer MIKE DITKA's restaurant, located in the vintage Tremont Chicago Hotel, will "likely NOT be renewed at year’s end" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 10/13).

IN MEMORY: Former FSU AD BOB GOIN passed away Saturday morning in Jacksonville after "suffering a major heart attack." He was 83. Goin "spent more than 40 years building and guiding college athletic programs." That "included tenures as athletic director" at Bethany College and California Univ. of Pennsylvania, and later at FSU and the Univ. of Cincinnati (TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT, 10/13).
