Court's Decision On Rental-Car Tax Bodes Well For Arizona Venues

A tax on rental cars in Maricopa County (Ariz.), among the highest in the nation, will "stay put" after the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed a case related to the tax, a decision that is "good news for future funding of sports stadiums in the county," according to Jen Fifield of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. The tax supports the Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority, which "helps fund State Farm Stadium, spring training stadiums, tourism and youth and amateur sports." ASTA President & CEO Tom Sadler said that many projects and programs "could have been potentially affected by the case, but haven't been to date, and won't be, because of the decision." He added that the authority "would soon provide an update on how soon and how much it would reimburse for spring training ballparks in Glendale and Goodyear." The rental-car tax, "designed to raise" more than $1B over 30 years, "led to the construction of State Farm Stadium." The ASTA said that the venues "benefit both Arizona residents and out-of-state visitors." The NFL stadium in Glendale has twice hosted Super Bowls and will again in '23 (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/8).
