Fox Sports to Broadcast MLB’s AL Championship Series in 4K HDR

As part of its 2019 MLB postseason coverage, Fox Sports will broadcast the American League Championship Series in 4K HDR. The network began broadcasting ALCS games in 4K resolution two years ago, but this will be the first time it uses HDR, which boosts the contrast of the picture to make it appear more lifelike.

The 4K offering will be available on the Fox Sports and Fox Now apps using Apple TV 4K and select Roku 4K-enabled devices. Fox Sports distributors such as DirecTV, Altice Optimum, Verizon Fios, TVision, and fuboTV will also broadcast the ALCS in 4K. Fox and Fox Sports 1 will televise all games of the ALCS, which is scheduled to begin Oct. 12. The American League Division Series will appear on FS1, and the World Series on Fox.

Fox is also planning to use additional camera technology within its postseason coverage. The network will implement multiple “dirt cams” around the infield to give viewers a “snails-eye” view of the action, and will bring an 8K HDR camera and its FlyCam system to select World Series games. FlyCam can capture aerial views of the entire stadium, and debuted at this season’s MLB All-Star Game in Cleveland.

The network will additionally use Pitchcast to render and visually compare the flights of balls throughout a game. Pitchcast relies on MLB Pitchtrax and Statcast data.
