D-Backs Signed NDA With Las Vegas, May Have Discussed Relocation

An agreement in '18 allows the D-backs to explore alternative options to Chase FieldGETTY IMAGES

The D-backs "signed a nondisclosure agreement with the city of Las Vegas more than a year ago," suggesting that the city "might have followed" Henderson, Nev., in discussing the team's potential relocation from Phoenix, according to a front-page piece by Shea Johnson of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. It is "unclear exactly how far discussions have advanced" between Las Vegas and the D-backs or "whether those talks are ongoing." The agreement with Las Vegas was executed Aug. 14, 2018, two weeks after the club "signed a nondisclosure agreement" with Henderson. Any formal proposal that Las Vegas "might have pitched was being kept confidential." The D-backs have "expressed a desire to remain in Arizona," but they "have not shut the door on relocation." Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said, "Everybody can hype it, 'This may happen,' but I don't talk 'may.'" Goodman "struck a cautious tone, given the city's history of being used as leverage by major sports franchises" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 9/13). When the D-backs "reached an updated Chase Field agreement with Maricopa County" in '18, they were "able to explore alternatives to their current home park" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 9/13).
