New Hayward Field Will Have Covered, Expandable Seating

A roof will cover the upper deck on the west side and some seats in the lower deck on the east sideUNIV. OF OREGON

Project managers unveiled some of the new additions to the Univ. of Oregon's renovated Hayward Field, including "about 12,700 permanent seats, approximately 6,000 covered by the roof," according to Ken Goe of the Portland OREGONIAN. Nike VP & Creative Dir Todd Van Horne said that after the renovations are complete, it will be "possible to expand seating capacity to as many as 30,000 seats for the World Championships." The two-deck stadium is "largely open on the north end, where there will be a pedestrian mall and plaza" where the temporary seats "will be added for bigger events." The stadium's "support beams for its translucent roof and its slender, nine-story office tower, are physically imposing and dominate adjacent buildings." The roof will "cover the upper deck on the stadium's west side." On the east side, it will "extend to cover some seats in the lower deck." Van Horne said that the top of the roof will be "dense and provide shade on a sunny day." Goe notes the roof's "density will lessen as it curves." There will be "meeting rooms, treatment rooms, locker rooms, an athletes' lounge, an amphitheater and even a barber shop." There also are "no obstructed views" in the facility, and "spectator comfort in the permanent seats has been a priority" (Portland OREGONIAN, 9/13).
