Bruins' Jeremy Jacobs Fulfills Long-Planned Transfer Of Ownership

Bruins Owner Jeremy Jacobs has signed over his franchise to his three sons and three daughters, which was part of a "long-planned succession" that he said he "finally executed earlier this year," according to Kevin Paul Dupont of the BOSTON GLOBE. Jacobs said, "I have given it to my kids. They are paying me some of the proceeds that come out of this. It happened this year. This was done on the basis that the longevity is going to continue in the hands of the Jacobs children, and the next generation will have it." Jacobs bought the franchise in '75 for some $10M, and "held it under his name for the last 44 years" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/7). Dupont in a separate piece noted it "remains to be seen" how Jacobs' legacy will be "viewed over time, both in Boston and around the NHL." Well into the first quarter-century of his ownership, he was "villainized as an absentee skinflint, interested far more in shaping the franchise into a cash cow than investing in the player talent that could vie for Stanley Cup championships." But that image has "softened considerably in the new millennium." Jacobs today is a "far softer, more congenial owner than the one who for years acted as if he loathed the Boston media" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/8).

UPDATED DIGS: In Boston, Gary Washburn noted TD Garden will have "more improvements this season after a summer of renovations." The "most distinct change is black seating to replace the black-and-gold-patterned seats" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/8).
