CFL Commissioner Talks Attendance, Alouettes Sale In Wide-Ranging Q&A

Average crowds for CFL games have surpassed 23,000 this season, and league Commissioner Randy Ambrosie said attendance is a "topic we're discussing almost daily and not just through the lens of the CFL," according to Dan Barnes of POSTMEDIA NEWS. Ambrosie added "many leagues are experiencing a similar phenomenon," saying consumers "have a lot of choice these days." He said the CFL gameday experience is a "work in progress." Meanwhile, Ambrosie revealed a CFL regular season game in Mexico is "on the agenda," and the league will be "having a follow-up discussion" with Mexico's Liga de Futbol Americano Profesional in the coming weeks. Ambrosie said he would "like to see" a Mexico game in '20. Regarding a possible sale of the Montreal Alouettes, Ambrosie said, "We decided it would be better if all of this was done quietly." He said the league is "working now with three groups involved in the process at various stages." With the XFL set to begin play in February, Ambrosie said the CFL is "watching" the relaunched league because "you should never ignore competition." But he also said the CFL is "no longer taking a back seat to anyone." Ambrosie: "Don't ignore what they're doing, but let's be focused on our future" (POSTMEDIA NEWS, 9/4).
