New MLB Deal With NTT Will Bring Ultra Reality Viewing To Baseball
MLB has reached a multiyear partnership with NTT that makes it the first Japan-based IT company to become an official MLB partner in the U.S. The collaboration will explore and leverage advanced technology platforms, including NTT's Ultra Reality Viewing (URV), to create new, innovative experiences for baseball fans. URV, which has been successfully used in Japan, generates and transmits HD and wide-angle visibility images in real time that cannot be captured by traditional cameras. It is able to express dynamic detailed moments and teamwork of supporting players that cannot be viewed in the conventional way of watching sports on television. The technology combines multiple 4K camera images into a super-wide image such as 12K in real time and transmits them synchronously to remote locations. With the super HD surround video, fans can view sports content as if they were watching it live in the stadium or on the field. MLB and NTT are in the planning stages for a prototype URV experience at select upcoming games. NTT is the official MLB fan experience partner for URV and is also becoming the title sponsor of MLB Network's Ballpark Cam technology. Controlled from MLB Network's studios in Secaucus, N.J., NTT Ballpark Cam is a network of cameras installed across all 30 MLB ballparks, allowing MLB Network to capture unique pre- and postgame on-field footage and live on-camera interviews for each of its eight studio shows.
