Rangers GM Jon Daniels said that the team "hopes to balance" the use of the roof at their new Globe Life Field next season with what is "best for 'us as a team and also good for the fans.'" However, he also said that the decision "won't be willy nilly from game to game." In Ft. Worth, Stefan Stevenson notes MLB "requires teams with retractable roofs to have guidelines on when and why they choose to play indoors or not." Daniels: "The league wants a policy in place so that teams don't decide on opening or closing their roofs based on who's pitching" (Ft. Worth STAR-TELEGRAM, 8/23).
GUARDED ANGELS: In L.A., Bill Shaikin notes as the Angels "negotiate a potential new lease with the city of Anaheim," one thing has been made "perfectly clear: The team name will remain the Los Angeles Angels." Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu said the name issue is "a distraction." He added, "We are not going into negotiations with that as the make-or-break issue that determines whether baseball stays in Anaheim" (L.A. TIMES, 8/23).
HIGHEST HONOR: In S.F., Ann Killion noted the A's on Tuesday "honored the late, great, witty and brilliant sports journalist Ron Bergman" by inducting him into their team HOF. The A's are also "creating a Ron Bergman award, to be given annually to a journalist for meritorious contributions covering the A's." The decision to "honor Bergman was made by A's brass." President Dave Kaval and VP/Communications & Community Catherine Aker "handled the classy presentation." In a "surprise development, enigmatic and elusive" Managing Partner John Fisher also was "on hand for the reception" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 8/22).
