Rutgers' Poor On-Field Play Leads To Big Dip In Football Ticket Sales

Rutgers is experiencing a 64% renewal rate of season-ticket orders, down from 87% last summerGETTY IMAGES

Rutgers has sold just 16,585 season tickets for the upcoming football season, representing a 27% "dip from last season," according to Keith Sargeant of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. It is the "lowest total" since at least '12, when Rutgers was accepted into the Big Ten. In '15, Rutgers sold 31,168 season tickets. This year, Rutgers is experiencing a 64% renewal rate of season-ticket orders, down from 87% last summer. A nationwide "struggle to sell tickets for college football games coupled with the Scarlet Knights’ on-field woes are likely reasons why Rutgers’ ticket sales are down." After "exceeding expectations" with a 4-8 record and three Big Ten wins in '17, Rutgers finished 1-11 overall and winless against Big Ten opponents in '18. School officials are "holding out hope that its season-tickets number could increase slightly over the next 2 1/2 weeks" ahead of the season opener against UMass at SHI Stadium. Rutgers’ 37,799 announced-attendance average last season was the "lowest figure since the team averaged 33,184 per game" in '05. However, Rutgers’ "actual-attendance average" for its seven-game schedule in '18 was 20,071 (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 8/16).
