Mizzou To Sell Alcohol At Memorial Stadium For '19 Football Season

Alcohol sales at Mizzou football games will conclude at the end of the third quarterGETTY IMAGES

Univ. of Missouri athletics has "approved beer and wine sales" at Memorial Stadium concession stands for all '19 home football games, according to Eric Blum of the COLUMBIA DAILY TRIBUNE. The school is partnering with its concessionaire, Levy Restaurants, in accordance with the SEC's "newly adopted alcohol-related policies." Alcohol sales at football games will "conclude at the end of the third quarter," and fans will "only be able to purchase two drinks per transaction at select concession stands selling beer and wine." In addition, all drinks will be "poured into a provided container when sold," while concession stands nearest to student seating areas "will not sell beer or wine." Less than half of the concession stands in the stadium "will serve alcohol." The school also said that it will "monitor alcohol sales at Faurot Field and will announce plans for sales in other venues, such as Mizzou Arena and Taylor Stadium, after analyzing feedback received from its stakeholders." An "alcohol-free zone will be established inside the football stadium, and anyone can request seats inside that designated area" (COLUMBIA DAILY TRIBUNE, 8/10).

DOING IT RIGHT: In Columbia, Sarah Everett noted Levy employees will complete State of Missouri Alcohol Responsibility Training classes that cover "spotting fake IDs and recognizing acceptable IDs, awareness of signs of intoxication and how to handle intoxicated customers." Memorial Stadium personnel and law enforcement will "monitor fan behavior and eject, arrest, or refuse sale to customers when necessary" (Columbia MISSOURIAN, 8/10). In St. Louis, Dave Matter noted MU is the "fourth SEC school to announce that it will sell alcohol in general seating areas," joining Arkansas, LSU and Texas A&M. MU "already allows alcohol sales in private suites and premium seating areas at football and basketball games." Since '15, the school has "seen attendance figures decline, along with revenues from ticket sales and concessions." Alcohol sales "could help boost those numbers" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 8/11).
