Georgia Tech men’s basketball coach JOSH PASTNER has "dropped a lawsuit claiming an Arizona couple defamed him with accusations of NCAA rules violations." In return, RON BELL and JENNIFER PENDLEY agreed to "drop a countersuit alleging the coach sexually assaulted Pendley." No money was "exchanged under the settlement" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 8/8)....A federal judge has "declined to dismiss" former Kansas football coach DAVID BEATY’s lawsuit against the school's athletics department, "allowing the multi-million dollar case to proceed." Beaty "sued Kansas Athletics in March, months after he was fired" toward the end of the '18 season and having received a $3M payout to conclude his contract (K.C. STAR, 8/8).

THE GOOD STUFF: Monumental Sports & Entertainment Founder & Chair TED LEONSIS is "spearheading a multipronged effort to improve schools and fuel economic growth in the impoverished neighborhoods" around Entertainment & Sports Arena in DC's Ward 8. The initiative, called "Forward8," includes "pushing for the expansion of advanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics" programs in DC schools (WASHINGTON TIMES, 8/8)....The Sharks will “donate $10,000 to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, which has organized the Gilroy Garlic Festival Victims Relief Fund” following last month’s shooting. A portion of the Sept. 22 Sharks Fan Fest proceeds will also “go to the fund. The team also said that it will "honor the shooting’s first responders during ‘Heroes Appreciation Night’ Jan. 27 with a pregame ceremony and puck drop” (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 8/9)….Grizzlies F KYLE ANDERSON will host his annual basketball clinic on Saturday. All donations to Kyle Anderson Celebrate Life Day will “benefit Erika’s Lighthouse, an organization focused on creating middle school and high school teen depression awareness programs” (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 8/9).

NAMES: The former owner of the now-defunct Major Arena Soccer League club Seattle Impact "went on trial Wednesday afternoon" for sexual assault charges in Phoenix. The jury trial in Maricopa County Superior Court is "expected to last two weeks in a case where two babysitters accused" DION EARL of "sexually assaulting them in separate instances more than five weeks apart" (SEATTLE TIMES, 8/8)....Gold Medal-winning U.S. gymnast LAURIE HERNANDEZ voices a character in Nickelodeon’s upcoming “MIDDLE SCHOOL MOGULS,” a series of half-hour CGI-animated specials premiering in September (THE DAILY)….The former MLB St. Louis Browns (now the Orioles) never won a World Series in their 52 seasons, but they are now the “subject of a second film made about them in as many years.” “A BASEBALL LEGACY -- FANS REMEMBER THE ST. LOUIS BROWNS," which is narrated by Cardinals TV broadcaster DAN MCLAUGHLIN, debuts on KETC-PBS on Saturday at 7:00pm CT. This year is the 75th anniversary of the “'Streetcar Series,' the 1944 Cardinals-Browns World Series” (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 8/9).
