Steelers Union Rep Speaks Out Against Longer NFL Regular Season

Foster would rather see the playoffs expanded, as opposed to adding more regular-season gamesgetty images

Steelers G and NFLPA rep Ramon Foster "spoke out against the idea" of extending the regular in which the NFL would limit players to 16 appearances in an 18-game schedule, according to Brian Batko of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. Foster said the better solution "may be extending the playoffs, more than anything." Foster: "I'm more quality over quantity at this point. Once you start extending stuff, you're going to give guys games off? You're just going to say, 'Hey, what are you paying for the season tickets? And your starting QB isn't playing that game simply because he can only play 16?' Well, in that case, keep it at 16 games. Put the best product back out there." Foster mentioned "perhaps having 10 or 12 playoff spots per conference" as an alternative way to add games to the schedule. He believes that it "makes more sense than the radical plan of 18 games" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 7/30). In Pittsburgh, Chris Adamski noted Foster's theory is that "everyone -- fans, players, owners -- like the playoffs," and the players are "against extra wear-and-tear during the regular season." Foster also "wants to preserve the four-game preseason because it's the only way for unknown players to show their skills in the pros" (TRIBLIVE.com, 7/29).
