Alex Rodriguez No Longer Advisor In Yankees' Front Office

Rodriguez became a Yankees special advisor in '18, but that arrangement ended during this past offseasongetty images

ESPN's Alex Rodriguez is "no longer being paid" by the Yankees, "nor does he hold a title with the organization," according to The Athletic's Marc Carig. Rodriguez had been hired in '18 as a special advisor, but that arrangement "ended during the offseason after discussions between Rodriguez" and Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner, though it "was not announced" (TWITTER.com, 7/29). In N.Y., Ken Davidoff notes since the Yankees released Rodriguez as a player in '16, he had "worked sporadically with younger players in the organization and also spoken occasionally for VIPs at Yankee Stadium." Rodriguez and the Yankees "remain on good terms." When the team "went to London last month, Rodriguez attended a clinic, alongside many other prominent Yankees alumni, that Steinbrenner hosted for local youths" (N.Y. POST, 7/30). In Newark, Randy Miller notes it is "unknown" how much Rodriguez gave the Yankees during his two seasons as an advisor, as he was "with them for two days of spring training" in '17 and one day in '18 (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 7/30).

CROSS-TOWN RIVALRY: In N.Y., Larry Brooks writes the Mets' "insistence on placing a tariff on the Yankees reeks of insecurity." When a team "essentially quarantines another one from trade talks, that does not represent an out-of-the-box approach." Instead, it "boxes in management by reducing the field by one." Brooks: "What are the [Mets Owners] Wilpons afraid of in declaring that the Yankees' offer for Noah Syndergaard would have to be leaps and bounds better than the next-best offer in order to consummate a trade? ... Are they afraid the Yankees have the resources the Mets lack ... that the Yankees are advanced in analytics? Would that not be an internal matter for ownership and the general manager to address immediately?" (N.Y. POST, 7/30).
