Patriots' Nick Caserio Keeps Eye On Vacant Texans GM Position

Caserio has been with the Patriots since '01, but his current contract expires after the '20 NFL Draftgetty images

Patriots Dir of Player Personnel Nick Caserio said "little of substance" during a press conference on Saturday when asked about his interest in the Texans GM opening, according to Ben Volin of the BOSTON GLOBE. The "lack of direct answers or denials" from Caserio tells Patriots fans everything they "need to know." He "left the door wide open for the Texans job." The Patriots now have until April to "convince him to stay." They also "could see about trading him to the Texans for a draft pick between February and April instead of losing him for nothing." If Saturday’s news conference told fans anything, it is that Caserio "still has his eye on Houston" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/28). The HOUSTON CHRONICLE wrote Caserio on Saturday "spoke in generalities." He "took the high road when asked about his emotions about not being allowed to meet with the Texans" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 7/28). In Boston, Karen Guregian wrote Caserio's contract is up after the '20 NFL Draft, then he will "be gone." Nothing Caserio said "should make anyone believe he’s staying" (BOSTON HERALD, 7/28).

WAIT AND SEE: Steelers VP & GM Kevin Colbert said that he "did not get a contract extension this offseason because he prefers to go year-to-year." ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler noted Colbert's deal now goes to May '20 instead of aligning with that of coach Mike Tomlin, who is under contract through '21 with an option year for '22 after "finalizing an extension" last week (ESPN.com, 7/27). Steelers President Art Rooney II said that it was Colbert's "decision to wait until after the season to decide on his future with the team." Rooney: "At this stage of the game, he’s really not looking to do any long-term planning" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 7/27). Colbert also said that there is "no succession plan with anyone who is currently a member of the front office." In Pittsburgh, Ray Fittipaldo noted several people in the organization "would be considered candidates to replace Colbert when his tenure ends" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 7/28).

MATCHMAKER: In L.A., Gary Klein noted the Rams extended the contracts of GM Les Snead and coach Sean McVay through the '23 season, though terms of the deals "were not disclosed." Meanwhile, Rams QB Jared Goff "reiterated this week that he was not concerned about an extension" of his own, and that his agents "would handle it at the appropriate time" (L.A. TIMES, 7/27). SI.com's Albert Breer notes Rams Owner Stan Kroenke was a "driving force" behind the deals for both Snead and McVay. It was "important for the club to tie coach and GM together." Snead was "entering this year with fewer than the three years that McVay had left on his existing contract, and now the two are synced up" through '23 together (SI.com, 7/29).
