Stephen, Ayesha Curry Launch Oakland-Focused Nonprofit For Kids

STEPHEN CURRY and his wife, AYESHA, are "committed to Oakland," as they are unveiling their "new family foundation, Eat, Learn, Play" today, according to Ann Killion of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The mission of the new nonprofit, which is "focused on children in Oakland, is to address three vital elements of a healthy, active childhood: nutrition, education and recreation." The Currys are "committed to making an annual seven-figure donation to the foundation that will cover all administrative expenses, so that other money raised will go entirely into the programs." Eat, Learn, Play will "partner with established organizations (including the Warriors) that are already working" in the Oakland community. Today's launch event at Lake Merritt includes "more than 800 children from Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development Town Camps." One of the foundation's "primary focuses will be addressing food insecurity." The nonprofit will "partner with several businesses, including Under Armour, Kaiser Permanente, Revolution Foods, Rakuten, Go Daddy and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit advocating active lifestyles for children." Eat, Learn, Play also will "provide educational support in the form of scholarships, mentorship and tutoring programs." It also will "help refurbish and support sports infrastructure and youth sports in the Bay Area" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/18).

HIDING BEHIND THE SCENES: SI.com's Jarrel Harris profiled Unanimous Media co-Founder & CEO JERON SMITH, the man whom Stephen Curry "picked to run his business and turn it into an empire." Smith, who also maintains his role as CMO of SC30, "works with Curry on a wide range of businesses within his portfolio." Many of the NBA's top stars have "found their passion in creating content within their own media companies." But as "busy as these players are during the season, it would be impossible for them to do it by themselves -- that is where Smith comes in to help" (SI.com, 7/17).
