Braves Exec VP & GM Alex Anthopoulos in a Q&A with the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION's Mark Bradley said he is not under a hard salary line from Liberty Media, and he goes to Braves Chair Terry McGuirk "for salary approvals and so on." Anthopoulos said, "I’ve met with our ownership group before, but I deal with Terry. ... We did the Ronald Acuna (extension), which was a $100 million commitment. Not once did Terry McGuirk tell me, 'I need to get back to you.' He gave me an answer right on the spot." More Anthopoulos: "I have not had a moment yet from a baseball operations standpoint where I’ve walked in needing above and beyond what I’ve been allocated and I’ve been told no" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 7/8).
JOINING THE CROWD: In New Jersey, Stephen Edelson wrote it was "hypocritical" of Gov. Phil Murphy to join the "deafening chorus of politicians, celebrities and fans expressing their support" in the USWNT’s quest for equal pay. NWSL club Sky Blue FC, which Murphy is part owner of, has been "competing on an unlevel playing field for some time," though Murphy claims it is "addressing the issues." Edelson: "Monday might have been a good opportunity for Murphy to take a deeper dive into the situation, rather than simply leaping onto the already overflowing bandwagon" (ASBURY PARK PRESS, 7/10).
CLOCK TICKING ON BLUE BOMBERS? In Winnipeg, Joyanne Pursaga noted the city will "review its agreements" with the CFL Blue Bombers and Triple B Stadium Inc., as well as what it "would take to end them." The local executive policy committee voted yesterday to "seek a report in about four months" that would "spell out what steps would be required to remove the city’s board members from both entities and divest the city’s membership interest in Triple B" (WINNIPEG SUN, 7/10).
