Fair Pay To Play Act Clears Another Hurdle In California Legislature

The state of California took another step toward "allowing its collegiate athletes to profit off of their names, images and likenesses," according to Ryan Kartje of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER. The Fair Pay to Play Act "passed through the state Assembly’s Higher Education Committee" yesterday with a unanimous 9-0 vote. The Assembly's bill will "next be heard in August by the Appropriations Committee." From there, it would "first move to the Assembly floor, then, if passed again, onto the Governor's desk." If passed, the bill "would not go into effect" until '23, which, according to the bill’s co-authors, "would give the NCAA ample opportunity to change its rules and the state plenty of time to make future adjustments" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 7/10). In L.A., Gilbert Manzano notes Chargers OT Russell Okung testified yesterday "in support of the Fair Pay to Play Act." Okung "took the floor in Sacramento for about 2 minutes to vouch for Senate Bill 206" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 7/10).
