Adidas Goes All Out For Washington With Football Unis, Apparel Deal

A boat tour on Tuesday allowed some media members to get a sneak peek of the Huskies' new uniformsADIDAS

Adidas on Tuesday allowed select media members to see the football team's new Adidas uniforms following their 10-year, $119M apparel contract, and it was "evidence that Adidas is willing to go all out for its newest client," according to Mike Vorel of the SEATTLE TIMES. Media took an exclusive boat tour, and photos and video were prohibited during the "exclusive sneak peek" of the uniforms before they are officially unveiled on July 10. All of the uniforms' numbers are "slanted at a 15 degree angle, to match the angle in the university's block W." The numbers themselves are "dotted with tiny artificial rain drops to provide a hint of regional flair." As for colors, the uniform "showcases a deeper, darker purple more akin to the color scheme in the early '90s, and the gold of the pants is meant to match the tone of the Huskies' helmets as much as possible." The angular numeral font is also "supposedly reminiscent" of former UW football coach Don James' era from '75-92. Vorel: "Remember the black flourishes in the program's previous Nike uniforms? Say bye-bye to the black. It's all purple, white and gold." UW football is "planning to showcase 'thoughtful,' eye-catching alternate uniforms once or twice per season," starting in '20 (SEATTLE TIMES, 7/3). THE ATHLETIC's Christian Caple notes fans should not expect an "enormous departure from what the Huskies wore during the Nike era" based on earlier comments from UW AD Jen Cohen. Gone are the aspects that "seemed to irk fans the most -- black on the shoulders, that weird little gold corner thing on the numbers, the rounded number font" (THEATHLETIC.com, 7/3).
