UNC Charlotte Will Test Selling Alcohol At Select Sporting Events

The proposed alcohol sales model being considered at UNC Charlotte will be a one-year pilot programUNIV. OF NORTH CAROLINA - CHARLOTTE

UNC Charlotte’s BOT has "authorized a pilot program to sell alcohol at the university’s football, baseball, basketball and soccer facilities" beginning in the fall of '19, according to Charlotte-based WBTV-CBS. Officials said that the "proposed model being considered at UNC Charlotte will be a one-year pilot program." North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper yesterday signed a bill into law that authorizes the BOTs at University of North Carolina system schools to "decide whether to sell alcohol at their stadiums and athletic facilities." The move brings the state's public universities "in line with private schools -- such as Wake Forest and Duke -- that are already selling alcohol at athletic games" (WBTV.com, 6/26).  In Durham, Steve Wiseman notes alcohol sales at N.C. State’s Carter-Finley Stadium and UNC’s Kenan Stadium previously have been "limited to high-end booster club donors." Allowing general alcohol sales at N.C. State is "seen as a way to keep more spectators in their seats after halftime." The school's "long-running policy of allowing fans to leave the stadium at halftime and return means many people return to their tailgates and aren’t prompt about being back inside the stadium for the third quarter." UNC AD Bubba Cunningham said that his school's BOT is "in favor of beginning sales," though no vote has taken place (Durham HERALD-SUN, 6/27).
