Megan Rapinoe's Fashion Sense Shows Her Influence Off The Field

Rapinoe said that her style often reflects her mood, and is her primary form of self-expressionMEGAN RAPINOE

USWNT F Megan Rapinoe scored both goals in the team's 2-1 win over Spain yesterday, and as she "continues to be a massive presence on the field," she also has "never shied away from using her voice to express who she is" off the field, according to FS1's Rob Stone. Rapinoe's "style and daily fashion choices have become an integral part of the message she wants to send to the world." Rapinoe said, "Fashion is everything to me. There's no part of my life that it doesn't touch. I wake up and I'm like, 'How do I feel today?' and then I dress to that. So, it's kind of my primary form of self-expression." Barneys Creative Ambassador At Large Simon Doonan spent some time with Rapinoe inside the N.Y. store and said, "It seems to me your approach to fashion is a perfect kind of reflection of how you approach everything." Doonan: "It's like no boundaries, no limits, and you're unconventional." Rapinoe replied, "I don't really care what other people think." FS1's Heather O'Reilly said, "What you cannot debate about Megan Rapinoe is that she uses her voice as an athlete" ("FIFA Women's World Cup Live," FS1, 6/24).

STOKING THE FLAMES? President Trump yesterday said that he "does not think it's appropriate" for Rapinoe to "protest during the national anthem." Rapinoe during previous NWSL matches has knelt during the anthem, and she has "abstained from singing along during pregame ceremonies" at the Women's World Cup (THEHILL.com, 6/24). But USA Today's Nancy Armour took to Twitter to call this a "really disingenuous story" and noted news outlets running it "ought to know better." Armour: "US Soccer rules prohibit protests, and there are many players (in all sports) who don’t sing or put hands on hearts during anthem. This same crap was pulled with Gabby Douglas in Rio." She added, "Given the way @thehill has been pushing this non-story with Rapinoe and the anthem, wonder when they’re going to start policing athletes in other sports" (TWITTER.com, 6/25).
