Philadelphia, Eagles Positioning To Host '26 World Cup Games

The Eagles have partnered with the city to bid to host World Cup games at Lincoln Financial FieldJIM KENNEY

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney "led a presentation" of the city's "intentions to serve as a host city" for the '26 World Cup, after being chosen as one of 23 prospective host locations last year, according to Jackson Satz of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. Yesterday's presentation "focused on Philadelphia's recent hosting successes," such as the '17 NFL Draft, '16 Democratic National Convention and a '15 Papal visit, but Kenney also "looked at the city's future hosting commitments as a sign that it can handle the responsibility." While Kenney described Philadelphia as a city whose "hosting capabilities have been doubted in the past," Philadelphia Bid Committee Chair David Cohen "expressed confidence not only that Philadelphia would secure a hosting spot, but also that the city would thrive in the spotlight of the World Cup." FIFA expects the list of prospective cities to be "cut to 16" by '21 (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 6/25). In Newark, Mike Kaye noted the Eagles have "partnered with the city as part of a bidding committee for the World Cup." Eagles Senior VP & CFO Frank Gumienny "discussed the appeal of Lincoln Financial Field's eco-friendly operation during the presentation" (NJ.com, 6/24).
