MLB Fran Notes: Future For Mets' Callaway Tenuous After Incident

Callaway told Mets PR staff to remove Newsday's Tim Healey during an obscenity-laced tiradeGETTY IMAGES

YAHOO SPORTS' Tim Brown writes the scene inside the Mets' clubhouse at Wrigley Field yesterday with Mets manager Mickey Callaway and P Jason Vargas verbally attacking a Newsday reporter shows Callaway has "lost command of both himself and that room." The fact it was his own doing "is a problem." Brown: "They should go ahead. Fire Mickey Callaway. Because he's not the right guy for the job. Because he couldn't handle it. Because he made management look bad" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 6/24). In N.Y., Kevin Kernan writes under the header, "This Is Mets Dysfunction At Its Worst" (N.Y. POST, 6/24).

OCTOBER SKY: In St. Paul, Charley Walters reported the Twins' "surge to the top of the American League has resulted in several hundred new purchases of season tickets," which allows those fans to have "priority seating for the postseason." The team plans to "aggressively market season-ticket sales for priority seating" during the playoffs. The Twins currently rank 18th in MLB attendance -- up from 20th in '18 -- and "could reach 2.2 million by season's end" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 6/23).

REDS' DAWN: In Cincinnati, Bobby Nightengale noted the Reds next season "expect to at least maintain" their franchise-record $133M Opening Day payroll. Reds President of Baseball Operations Dick Williams: "We very much think we're entering a window where we want to win." The Reds have "several players in the final year of their contracts," meaning they "could be one of the most intriguing teams around the trade deadline" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 6/22).
