UGA AD McGarity Talks Florida-Georgia Future, Alcohol Policy

McGarity said UGA is waiting on further discussion with Jacksonville on the Florida-Georgia seriesGETTY IMAGES

Univ. of Georgia AD Greg McGarity said the nature of any decision regarding the possibility of moving the annual Florida-Georgia football game from Jacksonville or turning it into a home-and-home series is "going to be 50/50, or 60/40 one way or another," according to a Q&A with Brandon Adams of the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION. McGarity said UGA is "waiting to have further discussion with the city of Jacksonville to where we can receive more updated information of what we may be looking at down the road." He added once that happens, he will "huddle with our peers" at Florida. McGarity: "I'm sure Georgia and Florida will be on the same page. We usually are on a lot of issues." McGarity noted there has been "some talk of Atlanta" playing host to the game, but he is "not sure that has much legs." McGarity: "If you're not going to play it in Jacksonville, then the games need to be on campus."

STAYING FIRM: Meanwhile, UGA decided not to allow alcohol sales in general seating areas at Sanford Stadium despite SEC university presidents voting last month to lift the ban on stadium-wide alcohol sales, and McGarity said it is "at least 2-to-1 on those that like" the policy as it is. He added those that are against selling alcohol in the general seating areas are "very vocal." McGarity said there are a lot of things that go into selling alcohol at stadiums "as far as the liability piece of it." McGarity: "It's really not a revenue decision. I know people might disagree with that, but the number -- I'm not sure it moves the needle for us to be able to say we're doing this because of revenue." In regard to football ticket prices, McGarity said UGA wants to "keep our prices stable." He noted they are currently at $75 for our premium games and $55 for others, but season ticket prices have "not increased this year, and hopefully we don't have to increase in the future" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 6/23).
