The Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning in N.Y. will host the WTA NYJTL Bronx Open from August 16-24, returning women's tennis to the New York tri-state area just months after the Connecticut Open "sold its WTA Premier sanction," according to Ed McGrogan of TENNIS.com. The International-level event will "offer players $250,000 in prize money, but it won’t cost fans even a dollar to watch those players," as they can attend the tournament for free. The 30-player singles tournament and 16-team doubles draw "will be the only WTA tournament taking place the week before the US Open" (TENNIS.com, 6/17). In N.Y., Adam Zagoria notes the new event will "essentially replace the Connecticut Open" on the WTA calendar. The NYJTL Bronx Open will be the "first pro event in the borough" since '12; until then Crotona Park had "hosted a tournament every year" since '93. While the Bronx Open will be free to the public, fans over 18 "will be asked to make a donation."
