USWNT Draws Strong Soccer Audience For Win Over Chile

The second group stage match for the U.S. at the FIFA’s Women’s World Cup marked the best rating for an English-language soccer match in the U.S. in a year. Fox drew a 3.8 overnight for the squad’s 3-0 win over Chile yesterday, which led into the net’s U.S. Open coverage. That figure is the best soccer match on English-language TV since Fox drew an 8.3 overnight for France’s win over Croatia in the men’s World Cup final last July. For another comparison, Fox in December drew a 1.2 overnight for Atlanta United’s win over the Timbers in the MLS Cup finale. The 3.8 yesterday also tops any of the U.S. group stage matches from ’15, which were all in primetime as that event in Canada. San Diego led all markets yesterday with a 6.7 local rating, followed by DC (5.8) and Tulsa (5.5) (Austin Karp, THE DAILY).

PICKING & CHOOSING: Fox' JP Dellacamera and Aly Wagner called yesterday's game, but in L.A., Tom Hoffarth notes Fox in recent years has "established John Strong and Stu Holden as its main soccer broadcast duo." They are not in France for the WWC, "but instead have stayed back" to follow the USMNT playing in the Concacaf Gold Cup (L.A. TIMES, 6/17).
