Sports Betting In U.S. Generates At Least $9B In Wagers For First Year

At least $9B has "been bet -- legally -- on sports in the U.S." in the year since the Supreme Court cleared the way for states to do it, according to Wayne Parry of the AP. The total number is "probably closer" to $10B, but most states have "not yet reported their May numbers." New Jersey took its first sports bets last June. Since then, the state's casinos and racetracks have taken in $2.94B. William Hill U.S. CEO Joe Asher said, "It's been a great first year, and I think the strong momentum is going to continue over the next 12 months. The business is still ramping up" (AP, 6/12).
